About Hawaii Car Price Index
Bringing transparency to Hawaii's car market, one listing at a time.
Our Mission
We believe Hawaii residents and newcomers deserve transparent pricing data. Cars cost 15-25% more in Hawaii than the mainland, and most people don't know this until they start shopping. We built this free tool to level the playing field.
Whether you're planning to buy locally, ship a vehicle from the mainland, or negotiate a better deal, understanding the Hawaii Premium is the first step toward making an informed decision.
How We Work
Daily Data Collection
We track 1,000+ active used car listings daily across all major Hawaiian islands (Oahu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai). This comprehensive dataset ensures our price indices remain current and representative.
Multiple Data Sources
Data sources include dealer websites, marketplace platforms, and classified listings. We aggregate information from the most popular car-buying channels Hawaiians actually use.
Mainland Comparison Data
Mainland comparison data comes from national pricing databases updated weekly. We compare apples-to-apples: matching vehicle make, model, year, and mileage range.
Hawaii Premium Calculation
The "Hawaii Premium" is calculated as the percentage difference between Hawaii asking prices and mainland averages. This single number tells you exactly how much more (or less) cars cost in the islands.
